Declaration of marriage

As of January 1, 2000, the publication of marriage banns was abolished and was replaced by the declaration of marriage.

When should the declaration of marriage be made?

The declaration of marriage must be made at the Registry Office, at least fourteen days before the celebration of the marriage. It is valid for a period of six months.
Beyond this time period, if the marriage has not been concluded, a new declaration will be made.

Who makes the declaration of marriage?

The future spouses, at least one of whom has legal residence in Herstal, who wish to marry in Herstal, must present themselves with their identification cards in order to complete the application for a marriage license. In the case of the absence of either party, a certified conformed copy of a power of attorney is needed.

The Registry Office is responsible for drawing together from other municipalities the certificates necessary for completing the application.

Once the certificates have been gathered, the future spouses must then come back to sign the certificate of declaration of marriage.

Therefore, they must come to the department twice in total.

The future spouses must also arrange for two witnesses.

These witnesses must be at least 18 years old.

People whose certificates were not prepared in Belgium are responsible for obtaining translated and legalized documents
